This Is the Good Stuff Vol. 5

Welcome to Friday, friends!

How was your week? Did you get anything done at all? Do you feel like you're back in the groove? Yeah, I get it. I really get it.

Anyway, I have more good stuff to tell you about. Let's begin!

OMG It's All This Good Stuff

I am going to keep this one short, but believe me – I am VERY enthusiastic about the following stuff:

Brittany Howard

You may know her as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Alabama Shakes. Or maybe you just know her as Brittany Howard. You may even know her in person. Or not at all. I don't know. I don't know what you know.

She's just really cool. And she lives in Taos, I guess, which is just a few hours north of me. Although she revealed in her wonderful interview on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that she might not be living there any longer. Oh well. It's cool to be around at the same time as her And to share some space, breathing similar air.

Her new album, Jaime, is really rad. Her Tiny Desk Concert is electrifying. I bet she's amazing live. I haven't seen her in person, but I'd love to change that.

Thinking Without Using Words

I had an experience over the weekend that reminded me of the stranglehold words have on my (and I bet your) conception of reality. It is possible to think without using words. Like we used to do when we were kids. When we were happier. We don't have to keep narrating our lives and acting like mid-level managers of ourselves in our minds. All that chatter is not me. It's not you.

Try thinking about things without using words some time. Not now, of course. You're reading this blog post! I need you to think about more words for, like, another three minutes, all right? Then you should go stare at a cloud. Great!

Spending Less Time on Facebook

Speaking of words, I can think of a lot of them to describe the way I feel about Facebook these days. None of them are very uplifting. So I'll spare you. I'm spending way less time there, though, and I can sense my personal intellectual stew of Facebook-induced word garbage is no longer at a full boil. Which makes it so much easier to think without using words. Which releases me from the heaviness of existence. Far out, man.

East Forest's Music for Magic Mushrooms: A Soundtrack for the Psychedelic Practitioner

Spending less time on Facebook has afforded me more time for hanging out in the psychedelic realm. No, that's not true at all. They have nothing at all to do with one another; I was just looking for a cute segue.

Anyway...

Yeah, the psychedelic space. For me, it's like going to the dump. Dropping off the accumulated trash. But the dump is also Disneyland. It smells like vanilla and all my closest interdimensional friends are there.

I was there recently and this amazing piece of music by East Forest provided the perfect architecture for my experience. Om.

NyQuil Straight Out of the Bottle

I've been sick. It's why this blog post is a little briefer than my usual output.

I've been moving a little slow during the daytime lately, which is fine, I guess. It's the nighttime sniffling, sneezing, aching, coughing and, well, you've seen the commercials. It's that stuff that's for the birds. Goddammit! This week, I've been feeling all right, during daylight hours, but at night I turn into a writhing, hacking, pasty mass of fever and loud sweat.

Man, NyQuil is so good. It says what it does and then it does it. It takes care of it. I'm grateful to have that stuff in my medicine cabinet. It's the only thing that keeps me from turning into a snot werewolf at night. And we've got a full moon today, friends.

You Got Any of that Good Stuff?

Give it up. You've got to. Let me have it.

See you next time!
