‘Family Plot’ – The Second Album by Matt Kollock – Arrives June 21, 2024

A modified version of the album cover for Matt Kollock's 'Family Plot,' featuring text announcing the album's release on June 21, 2024

I’ve been waiting a while to make this announcement:

My second solo album will be titled Family Plot, and it will be released worldwide on all streaming platforms on June 21, 2024.

Goddamn, that feels good!

Out of the Bag, Energetic and Angry

With today’s release of lead single (and album opener) “The Shame Shovel,” I begin the process of preparing people for my next big statement as an artist and musician.

Family Plot represents my most honest and personal artistic statement. Its 20 tracks trace my healing journey from the trauma of childhood through to my current existence as a successful artist embraced by a loving chosen family.

I made the album in the wake of my estrangement from my family of origin, and I dedicate it to them. The idea was that I wanted to piss them off while also connecting with other survivors of childhood trauma and neglect. I have a feeling I’m going to succeed wildly.

I started writing the songs for the album back in the summer of 2021. Tracks were recorded in the winter of 2022 in Sorrento, Maine. Additional recording happened in Atlanta, Georgia in the summer of 2022. Mixing and mastering happened a little bit in Atlanta, but mostly in Albuquerque, New Mexico throughout 2023 and a little bit into 2024.

It’s been a long time coming and it took a lot of hard work to get here. I am so proud, excited and satisfied with this album. I really can’t wait for you to experience it!

Elevating Disreputable Emotions and Musical Forms

Sonically, Family Plot was influenced by my favorite “heavy” artists, with an emphasis on the harder-rocking music from my youth. Artists like Mötley Crüe, Melvins, Pixies, Faith No More, Ween, Minutemen and Alanis Morissette were all hanging out in my head while I made my record.

Instrumentally, it’s all guitars, bass, drums and vocals. No keyboards. No horns. No synths or samples. Nothing that wouldn’t appear on a Black Sabbath album. For this album, I was focused totally and completely on rock and roll.

Musically, Family Plot is characterized by high energy and numerous layers of distorted guitars and angry vocal gangs. Lyrically, it focuses on pain, trauma, neglect and healing without pulling any punches. Along the way, it manages to be both deadly serious and wildly irreverent.

I played all the instruments, did all the singing and produced the proceedings entirely. My wife, Annie Sanchez, is the album’s Executive Producer, and she appears as the featured artist on one track while providing backing vocals on another.

I’m describing this album as an “epic hard-rock concept album.” That feels about right, I think. It’s a big statement. It carries a lot of weight and is charged with lots of energy. I’m not sure if I’ll ever make something as cool as this album again. I can’t wait for you to experience it!
